HOW DO WE CONTRIBUTE TO WHAT IS ALREADY BEING DONE?

Thousands of workers in hundreds of far-flung forestry worksites and large industrial plants. Many small, subcontracted businesses. Diverse microcultures. One single objective.”

We spent nearly six continuous months in the field talking to and taking pictures of the workers and, above all, trying to understand in practice the subjects raised by their management teams.

We also studied the specialized literature.

We quickly realized that the safety measures were insufficient. They provide a “summary,” but it is impossible for them to account for every single situation. As well as the unpredictable human factor. It was necessary to complement them with a deeper understanding.

It would not be enough to dress the workers in space suits full of safety sensors, or in protective armor.

We created a seal that symbolizes the concepts and understandings we developed as we joined the workforce on this journey.

The workers spontaneously made it their own. We used it as a tool to complement the formal work being done on this subject from a different angle.

WITH THIS SEAL, WE REPRESENT THE VALUES WE BELIEVE ARE KEY TO CONTRIBUTING TO A CULTURE OF SAFETY:

PRIDE,

SELF-ESTEEM:

The three pines represent three people who see themselves as big, important, proud of their work.

Love for life:

Often, in order to create an impact, it has been necessary to resort to using the gravity of death to make the workers understand the importance and seriousness of the issue.

In this case, we thought it healthy to complement that communication with a “love for life” as a reminder of what is trying to be preserved.

Nature:

We wanted to connect people to nature. Nature has a positive effect which reconnects and balances us.

Making friends with work and the origin of everything:

We believe that connecting with the origin and meaning of work would be a good complement to the culture of safety.

Regarding the origin of everything, it is worth remembering that we are part of a natural cycle, which tends to create stability. At first, pride over industrial achievements made people forget that everything is part of a seed that becomes wood.

BEING GENUINE

After a long time talking to workers and families at forestry worksites, we learned that “being genuine” was an essential value to them, beyond what one could imagine.

In a literal sense it has to do with honesty, a requirement for any healthy and productive relationship.

But it also has much more intimate and profound roots, certain almost existential characteristics: I genuinely am, I am not plastic (I exist).

OVER THE YEARS THIS SEAL HAS COME TO REPRESENT SOMETHING POSITIVE FOR THE WORKERS, BEYOND SAFETY ITSELF.

BECAUSE OF THIS WE HAVE USED IT IN OTHER COLLABORATIONS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH LIFE, BUT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE.

Being genuine also helps to modify certain ingrained views.

“I have years of experience, I can take care of myself”

A person’s age or hierarchy does not matter, this seal turns the subject into something very concrete: do you or do you not comply with safety agreements and regulations.

This directly helps the dangerous belief that older people know how to do things and take better care of themselves based solely on experience.

Unidirectional view of safety in which workers are the ones meant to comply

This also addresses the fact that those higher up the hierarchy believe safety is a subject exclusive to the workers, and that they must at most demand compliance with the rules. With this slogan, however, we are all at the same level, an applied level of values. We all must comply with and contribute to safety, regardless of hierarchy.

Safety as a personal and value-based commitment

This brings safety to the level of a personal and value-based commitment. For many, it seems as if safety regulations should only be followed to avoid penalties by the risk management officer. Through this expression, we bring compliance to a more personal level and understanding.

Apart from the strong values of this phrase, when everybody has the same sticker on their truck or helmet, geologists, workers, bosses, supervisors, managers, everybody, a network is created, a level where we can all relate to one another as equals.
